Ioan and Anona

Ioan and Anona’s Rockin’ Wedding

An absolutely awesome wedding I had the privilege of photographing last month (April 2012). The church service was in Anona’s home town of St Dogmaels, Cardigan with the reception taking place at Gellifawr. Transport was an old split screen VW Camper. They had live music from a Rock-a-billy band and stabbed their skull wedding cake in the head. It totally rocked! It was also the first and only wedding I’ve been too where everything from the service to the speeches was bilingual in both Welsh and English. The images are a mixture of colour, black and white and vintage styles and there’s a bit of everything in here, from Anona and the girls getting in ready in the salon right through to a photobooth late in the evening that got a little out of hand.

Bad Bread

I recently had the pleasure of a funny spending a funny if not somewhat bizarre afternoon with two thirds of the London based comedy duo trio Bad Bread. On their web-site it says

The history of Bad Bread is long and is currently being made into a trilogy starring Daniel Radcliffe, Joey Essex and Denise Welch. The brief plot outline of the film and their lives is depicted below:

Ant meets Tom.Ant offends Tom. Ant apologies to Tom and they become friends. They write comedy together. Ant and Tom meet Brydie. Ant offends Bryide. Tom apologies for Ant. Brydie agrees to do comedy with Tom (and Ant). Ant + Tom + Brydie = Bad Bread

Bad Bread had a very successful 2011. After a sell-out at the Brighton Fringe, their Edinburgh run garnered much praise and only the odd death threat. Bad Bread also featured on ‘Spank’, ‘High Jinx With The Hamiltons’ (where Ant kissed Christine) and ‘Gemma Goggin’s Celebrity Sleepover’ to name but a few. Individually, they also all featured in the ‘Great Big Sketch Off’ at the Pleasance. They would like to thank all that came and made the festival great!

(That’s Tom above and Ant below)

As you can see I got all excited and made my first gif animation on photoshop. It really was quite easy to do, just go window-animation, load your images into layers, make frames from layers, save for web and devices. You should try it, I think I may do this again one day.

Anyway they’ve got a new show coming up called the lol-o-caust and decided a trip to Swansea was in order to make a pilgrimage to the famed Hitler House. This humble end of terrrace abode on Swansea’s Fabian Way was catapulted into the limelight last year after comic Jimmy Carr tweeted its resemblance to the Furor himself, it went on to feature in numerous national newspapers and made a brief appearance on Have I got News for you or some other similar programme. Anyway Tom and Ant had heard of the house and travelled from London to Swansea, where I meet them, made them a cup of tea then took them down to have a photo or two outside. We also took the opportunity to shoot a few head shots. After we finished they headed to Mumbles and enjoyed a Joe’s Ice Cream, which they later informed me via email was very nice and the perfect way end to their brief visit to our fair city.

Please note – those are not Swastikas they are smiley faces. In NO way does Ben Wyeth Photography seek to promote the Nazi party!

Probably the worst blogger in the world ever!

Hi All,

yep I think it’s pretty fair to say I am one of the worst bloggers ever. Anyone who checks back here even on a fairly infrequent basis may well assume that I’ve given up, disseapered off to the other side of the world or possibly even died. However, none of this is true. I’m still here, still snapping and actually really busy. This is one of the problems with having a blog attached to your web-site, if you don’t update it regularly people assume your not working and this isn’t the case. Truth is I’ve been super busy of late and when I haven’t been shooting, editing or booking more jobs I’ve been hanging out with my beautiful girls, chasing waves and generally doing anything but updating my blog. I know I need to make more time to keep this updated, along with all the social media stuff but hey, what can I say. Anyhow, gonna try and do a bit of a recap of the last few months.

First up, I’ve added a few new galleries and given the commercial and personal portfolios a bit of a tweak. You can check them out over on http://www.benwyeth.co.uk/editorial/ I’ve split this side of the site up into different galleries or “books”.

Book 1 is a selection of commercial work, personal projects and just some of what I feel represents my stronger more striking images. There is a mixture of lit studio and location images and some natural light stuff on here. I guess this is what I’d show prospective clients in terms of a portfolio.

Ben Morgan, Llanelli Scarlets and England Rugby player photographed for The Telegraph. 2012

This image was taken during a family portrait session I shot in Swansea. Super-Grandad!

This image is actually from an engagement shoot with Helen and Stan a couple whose wedding I shot last year.

A group of professional boxers shot last year for the local paper.

Thilini Manel, a portrait I shoot some years ago now in Sri Lanka.

Book 2 – is a collection of images taken from personal and professional jobs with a bit more of a humorous twist.

There are also galleries of “famous people” and an edit of my travel work in “Sri Lanka”. Check it out there is a wide range of images of there, which I feel best represents my work and to an extent me as well.

Some of the more interesting jobs I’ve shot over the last few months have included. The archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, who I shot for The Welsh Assembly when he recently visited Cardiff to chair a debate and give a question and answer session. You can view more of the images here

I also did another commission for the WAG photographing former New Zealand PM and UN administrator Helen Clark.

Other commercial photography work has included a pr job for Cancer Research UK.

Some images for Veras shoes and Swansea Metropolitan University.

and I even went to church.

I have also covered another trolley dash for the magazine – Take A Break, these jobs always involve an early start but are great fun, photogrpahing people rush around their local supermarket filling their trolleys with as much as they can.

There have been lots more and I will feature them on subsequent posts. I think there could well be a deluge of stuff coming online soon. As you can see being a photographer based in Swansea, I get to cover a wide range of different and varied subjects for an equally wide range of clients and publications. I think this is one my favourite parts of what I do professionally, always going to different places and shooting different things, this helps keep me interested and excited never knowing what is round the corner.   Thats enough rambling for now. Stay tuned for more.

Now featured on

Do you remember this awesome laid back wedding I shot last summer in Porthtowan, Cornwall with Olly and Grace.

Well it has been featured on the amazing wedding blog, Whimsical Wonderland Weddings, which features loads of really cool and useful inspiration for bride’s to be. It’s definitely worth a look there is absolutely heaps of stuff on there! You can see the feature on Olly and Grace by clicking the button below.

I am also now listed On http://www.weddingphotographyselect.co.uk. Making it even easier for couples to find me.

This week I’ve mainly been working on getting ready for the super exciting Something Kinda Vintage Wedding Fair. It’s the first event of it’s kind I’ve taken part in and I’m really looking forward to it. Over the last few years I’ve tended to shy away from wedding fairs, preferring to rely on word of mouth to promote my work but when I was contacted by Shell last year at Something Kinda Vintage this event really appealed and struck a cord with me. The few wedding fairs I’ve been along to have reminded me more of a trade show rather than an event brimming with creativity. With loads going on throughout the day there should be a lot more to do rather than walking round picking up leaflets and getting the hard sell from suppliers. There is even a “drop your man off here area” nuff said! I will be running a photo-booth styled specifically for the event with a few twists, which I’m keeping under wraps till the day.

Something Kinda Vintage

The awesome Something Kinda Vintage Wedding Fair! is taking place in a couple of weeks on Sunday 4th March at Swansea’s Brangwyn Hall between 11-4pm. I’m super excited to be attending and this is the only wedding fair of 2012 that I  will be at this year.

There are some really exciting, unique exhibitors taking part and it’s set to be a little more than your average wedding fair. All proceeds will be donated to the Singleton Breast Care Unit

Shell Lewis of ‘Something Kinda Cute’ Wedding Stationery is very excited to bring you this unique vintage-inspired wedding fair.

This fair will be sure to put a fun twist on the ‘traditional’, with lots of fantastic local and national exhibitors all creating something other than the norm. From cupcakes and crockery hire to photography and floral arrangements, jewellery and gifts to decoration and (vintage-style) dresses, ‘Something Kinda Vintage’ wedding fair will be sure to help you bring that quirky and creative edge to your big day.

Throughout the day you will be able to enjoy live entertainment and watch our wonderful fashion show – you need to see it to believe it! We also have lots of hands-on experiences to get stuck in to, including bird-cage veil making, hair & makeup demonstrations, a fun photo-booth and, best of all, a place to chill out and enjoy a cup of tea and some delicious cake from the pop-up tea parlour, supplied by the Vintage Tea Party Company. Mmmm…

Sound perfect? Well, we’re not done yet. There will also be lots of vintage or vintage inspired items to purchase on the day, along with a very special area to drop your man off! We’ll make sure he’s safe, promise.

With all this, you are bound to find a ton of inspiration and
many companies who will help you perfect your dream wedding,
as well as having a truly fun day out with friends or family!

Thank You

I recently received a couple of lovely cards and gifts from some of my couples from this summer. Always an awesome surprise when you get stuff like this in the post and helps me to remember why I love shooting weddings so much.

Flic and Sara where an awesome couple I photographed in August this summer. Flic is from Australia’s East coast and Sara is from Merthyr. They met and fell in love in Australia where they now make their home and returned to Wales for a few weeks this summer to get married. You can see a gallery of images from their wedding day by clicking this link. Flic and Sara Gallery.

I also got this great post card that Olly and Grace had put together themselves with a few shots they’d cobbled together from friends and family. They were the ones who had the super cool relaxed beach wedding in Cornwall this summer. You can view their gallery here. Olly and Grace Gallery.

Americano Jazz Caffe

As part of the on-going project with Swansea Metropolitan University, documenting their graduates who have gone on to found their own businesses, I went along to The Americano Jazz Caffe in Swansea’s SA1. What a venue, seriously awesome place, its not huge as you can see from the images below but its very nicely done out inside and is a about as far removed as you can get from the horrors of Wind Street (if you haven’t been to Wind St, just think the only way is Essex, throw in heaps of steroid fuelled meat heads, a few buckets of vomit, sea gulls peaking at a discarded doner kebab and your nearly there.) The Jazz Caffe is an intimate sophisticated venue right on the water front serving some awesome tapas and with regular live music. The evening I was there there was an awesome trio of musicians form Porthcawl who play under several names, depending on the style they’re playing, JpThree (new blues) and Milk Biscuit (jazz, funk and fusion)

Vintage or Contemporary???

There’s been a very noticeable shift recently with many photographers trying to get their digital camera’s to look like a traditional film camera. In this entirely digital age analog is suddenly cool and vintage is back. It’s a strange phenomenon when on the one hand everyone is buzzing about megapixels, how sharp the images are and spending thousands of pounds on equipment only to go and photoshop the images to make them look like they where taken on a traditional film camera. But I guess that is part of the appeal of digital, you can have multiple versions of the same image. I’m sure this is in part due to many of the photo apps for camera phones, I know my facebook feed is constantly filled with iphone pictures all fully retroized.

Either way as I’m keen to embrass recent trends I have been offering my wedding clients full edits in colour, black and white and vintage retro. There is definitely a nice feel to the vintage look, and whilst it works really well for some shots it can be distracting on others. With the galleries I’ve been posting of the wedding edits I haven’t really included this look as I want them to have a consistent feel throughout the gallery but this may be something I need to address.

Anyway here’s a direct comparison normal colour image up top with a vintage cross processed version below.

I just wish a couple would approach me and say can you shoot our wedding entirely on film. (I got a beautifull Hasselblad 6×6 medium format camera just sat collecting dust) A daunting prospect but the images would be amazing!

Kate and Drew

I’ve been uber busy but getting close to putting the finishing touches to Kate and Drew’s wedding snaps. Really pleased with how they’ve turned out and have uploaded a ton of them to a gallery for you all to check out. To view them click the link below to be re-directed. Here’s a couple of my favourites below. There’s still a few tweaks before they’re finished but they’re to good not to share. Will update the gallery as the images are finished.

Swansea V Man City

I was fortunate enough to have a ring side seat for the Swans debut in the Premiership, last Monday up in Manchester. I had high hope’s for this outing with Man City being one of the worlds richest clubs so you can understand my slight disappointment to discover the photographers are kept in the basement and only given a sandwich and a cup of tea whilst the journo’s are upstairs in plush surroundings, free bar and a choice of hot food. But dispite the four hour each way journey time and the lack of a decent meal it was an awesome experience to witness from such close proximity a real moment of history for the club and the city. Sure the result didn’t go our way but when you compare budgets between the two clubs thats hardly suprising. Still plenty of positives for the team to take from the match and I’m sure Wigan will be a different story this coming weekend.

Brecon Jazz Festival

I spent last weekend covering the Brecon Jazz Festival. A Daily Telegraph event that takes place annually in Brecon, Powys and features some of the biggest international names in Jazz.

Allen Toussaint was one of the big names on the saturday night. He looked super sharp in this red and gold suit. Only let down slightly by the socks and sandals combo he was wearing.

There where a fair few photographers present at the festival. Here they all are trying to photograph Toussaint’s performance from in front of the stage.

Maceo Parker: “his name is synonymous with Funky Music, his pedigree impeccable; his band: the tightest little funk orchestra on earth.”

Mina Agossi was one of the best performers I had the pleasure of photographing. Her voice is incredible and she clearly enjoyed herself whilst performing.

Led Bib, a band at the forefront of young british Jazz.

Her off the telly. Eastender’s mute barmaid “Tracey” spent a couple of days at the festival watching a variety of performances.

Femi Kuti and The Positive Force had the honour of closing the festival and they didn’t dissapoint. With a an action packed performance full of vibrant energy they played to one of the largest crowds of the weekend.

Former First minister Rhodri Morgan was there with his wife.

The Robert Glasper Experience was one of my personal highlights. Normally as a photographer you only get to photograph the first song or five minutes and have to rush off to another performance but this band where so good I took a seat at the back and enjoyed the show.

This artist was at the side of the stage doing some charcoal drawings of the performance.

Kitt and Marco’s wedding

I’ve now uploaded Kitt and Marco’s fab Cardiff wedding to wedding site. To view the gallery CLICK HERE and you will be redirected straight to the gallery. There’s loads of images from what was an amazing day. Kitt is from Texas and Marco from Bridgend and they managed to inject some of their personality and heritage into the big day.

Here’s one of the group shots taken outside Cardiff Museum, which was right opposite the Park House Members Club where the service and reception took place.

HRH Duchess of Cornwall

Pretty apt I put this set up today featuring the Duchess of Cornwall as that’s where we’re all heading later on this afternoon. That’s right we’re packing up and heading down to Porthtowan to photograph a wedding down there on Friday, all taking place right on the beach, wooohoo can’t wait. Still not sure whether Cornwall counts as a destination wedding and I therefore become a destination wedding photographer, but it sounds pretty darn glamorous to me so going to roll with it!

Anyway back to the pictures at hand. During my second day at Hay, Camilla made a surprise visit catching most people unawares. The police sniffer dogs checking the site the morning of her arrival should have been a bit of a clue as was the sound of the private helicopter landing in a nearby field. She came, read to some children, wandered around then left, I got a few frames, check em out!

mmmmmm can I have a chip please?????

I think is probably my favourite image from the whole festival. This guy glanced up saw what was going on but remained completely unfazed and just carried on reading his book about Nazi Germany. I had a quick chat with him afterwards, and he simply said well I thought the book was more interesting than she was. Fair Play!

I thought this was hilarious and just about sums up the press’ ability to conjure up a story from no where. Whilst visiting some of the stands at the festival Camilla popped into this shoe store selling these funky coloured shoes. Making a polite comment about how they would be perfect for royal visits as they looked more comfortable than the heels she was in, the assistant replied that they had sold out of her size. The next day, that was the story that ran, shoe shop denies Camilla footwear for the festival, really did they, I dont think so!!!!!!! Great little bit of pr for Zims shoes however.

Hay Randoms

About to blog a whole heap of photo’s from the not so recent Hay Literary Festival 2011. 26/05/11 – 05/06/11 I only covered three days but with sooo much going on got to see loads of interesting stuff. I can’t recommend the festival enough, it was cheap (no entry fee and you only pay for the talks you want to see most less than £10 each), loads going on with in excess of ten/fifteen events per day for ten days, and a whole host of amazing people from household names to leaders of academic fields and more.

Here’s a few general shots from the three days.

Entrepreneurs

As a graduate from Swansea Metropolitan University I still stay in touch with a few people there and was recently commissioned to photograph and produce some display materials featuring myself and some other graduates who have gone on to become entrepreneurs.

As well as my handsome self (above) we also featured three other young entrepeneurs. Ben Room has set up Board Riding Development BRD and runs a mountain boarding centre at Weobley Castle, Gower.

Meg Evans (below) runs On Your Beach, an environmentally aware arts organisation that addresses costal litter issues by turning them into various works of art and textiles.

Last but not least is my good friend and fellow photographer Jon Lewin. Jon and I worked together to produce these posters to be displayed in the University.

Benji gets punched

Clare Jones, Tonypandy, South Wales, was recently found guilty of benefit fraud at Pontypridd Magistrates and recieved a suspended sentence. Miss Jones was illegally claiming incapacity benefit alledging that she was unable to walk without assistance and could not stand to work. The case received a fair amount of press coverage as the investigators found that Miss Jones had infact been skydiving at Swansea Airport whilst claiming she was to ill to work.

I was asked to go along and photograph her at a court apperance at Pontypridd Magistrates. Upon her arrival she kept her head down as she approached the court building making it very difficult to get a useable shot. As she got closer I decided to shoot from a low angle with a wider lens in the hope of getting a decent shot. As she drew alongside me she lashed out punching me in the side of the head. Fortunately for me the punch was fairly weak and only served to knock my sunglasses from my head, fortunately for you ITV were there filming for the local news and they very kindly released the footage meaning everyone can have a good laugh at Benji getting knocked out by a supposedly incapacitated woman.

Armed Forces Day, Cardiff 2011

Following on from my work with the British Legion I was asked to do some pr stuff for the organisers of Armed Forces Day, covering the Cardiff event. This job represented something of a first for me in that I was asked to shoot both stills and video throughout the day. Shooting both stills and video single-handed posed a few problems and meant that both were in a way a compromise. That said I’m still pretty happy with the result. I really enjoyed shooting video and liked the challenge that it presented. With a fitness video currently in the early stages as well its unlikely this will be my last video commission.
